The
Director of Athletic Performance
is a senior leadership role responsible for the comprehensive oversight and execution of performance training programs designed to optimize student-athlete development, injury prevention, and peak performance. This role operates with significant autonomy, making high-level decisions regarding the physical preparedness and well-being of basketball student-athletes while integrating sports science methodologies to enhance performance outcomes. The Director serves as a subject matter expert in performance training, overseeing all facets of strength and conditioning, nutrition, and recovery strategies—particularly in travel environments—while ensuring compliance with
NCAA
, American Athletic Conference, and university regulations.
Essential Functions & Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Program Oversight
Independently design, implement, and evaluate comprehensive strength and conditioning programs tailored to the unique physiological and performance demands of basketball student-athletes.
Lead and manage all aspects of athletic performance initiatives for basketball, including in-season, off-season, and travel-specific training and nutrition strategies.
Spearhead the integration of
sports science principles
into performance training, leveraging data analytics and cutting-edge research to drive player development, injury mitigation, and recovery optimization.
Directly oversee the
Pathways Program
students, providing mentorship and guidance in the field of sports performance and applied training sciences.
Decision-Making & Operational Excellence
Exercise independent judgment in assessing player workload, training modifications, and return-to-play protocols in collaboration with medical and coaching staff.
Develop, oversee, and manage the athletic performance budget, making strategic purchasing decisions for state-of-the-art training equipment and recovery tools.
Establish best practices in nutritional planning for student-athletes, with a specialized focus on performance sustenance during travel and competition schedules.
Leadership, Mentorship & Collaboration
Supervise and provide leadership to strength and conditioning interns and staff assigned to basketball, fostering a culture of accountability, professionalism, and high performance.
Serve as a direct liaison between the basketball coaching staff, athletic training, sports science, and health and wellness teams to ensure a holistic approach to athlete performance.
Build and sustain strong professional relationships with student-athletes, coaches, alumni, and external stakeholders to promote the university’s athletic excellence.
Required Qualifications & Expertise:
Education & Certification:
Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
Current certification from a nationally accredited strength & conditioning organization (
CSCS
,
SCCC
, or equivalent).
Current
CPR
/
AED
certification (must include in-person component).
Experience & Expertise:
Minimum
seven years
of progressively responsible experience in collegiate or professional-level strength and conditioning, with direct oversight responsibilities.
Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and manage staff, interns, and student workers in a high-performance training environment.
Proven expertise in integrating
sports science applications
, including workload monitoring, injury prevention strategies, and advanced recovery methodologies.
Extensive knowledge of
performance nutrition
, particularly in high-intensity travel settings, with a focus on meal planning, supplementation, and hydration protocols.
Strong understanding of
NCAA
compliance and ethical considerations in student-athlete performance training.
Special Job Dimensions:
Position requires handling
sensitive and confidential
student-athlete data.
Frequent evening, weekend, and overnight travel required to support team performance on the road.
Significant decision-making authority in athlete training, safety, and performance optimization.
