ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR / SPORTS MEDICINE

Position Summary

The Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine serves as a certified and licensed athletic trainer for the men’s basketball program, providing comprehensive healthcare services to Central Michigan University (CMU) intercollegiate student-athletes. This position plays a key leadership role within the Sports Medicine unit and reports directly to the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine. 

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited athletic training program.
Four years of full-time professional experience as a certified athletic trainer in intercollegiate or professional athletics.
Certification as an athletic trainer in good standing with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).
Current licensure as an athletic trainer in the state of Michigan, or eligible for licensure upon hire.
Current CPR/AED certification for the healthcare provider (or equivalent).
Experience working within a collegiate athletic training environment.
Proven leadership, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented setting.
Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Comprehensive knowledge of, and commitment to, NCAA and Mid-American Conference (MAC) rules and regulations.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, Kinesiology, or a closely related field.
Five years of certified athletic training experience.
Experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer at the Professional or NCAA Division I level.
Previous experience serving as a head or lead athletic trainer at the collegiate or professional level.
Experience supervising, mentoring, and developing athletic training staff, graduate assistants, interns, and/or students.
Proficiency in electronic medical record (EMR) systems commonly used in athletic training (e.g., Healthy Roster, SportsWare, Epic, or similar platforms).
Proven ability to collaborate effectively with team physicians, strength and conditioning coaches, and other allied health professionals.
Experience designing and implementing comprehensive injury prevention, treatment, and return-to-play protocols.
Advanced certifications such as Graston Technique, Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), Active Release Techniques (ART), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES), or Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES).

Duties & Responsibilities

Athletic Training & Student-Athlete Care:
Serves as the primary certified athletic trainer for an intercollegiate athletic team, as assigned by the senior associate athletic director for sports medicine.
Provides medical coverage and support to additional sport programs as assigned.
Provides comprehensive athletic training services, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, referral, and rehabilitation for orthopedic and non-orthopedic conditions.
Develops and manages individualized rehabilitation programs for both surgical and non-surgical cases.
Coordinates with team physicians and external healthcare providers to facilitate referrals, diagnostic testing, and follow-up care.
Oversees daily documentation and medical record-keeping using the department’s electronic injury tracking system, including treatments, progress notes, imaging, and physician communications.

Collaboration & Communication:
Maintains consistent and effective communication with assigned coaching staff and strength & conditioning personnel.
Collaborates with Academic Services to coordinate care plans, schedule adjustments, and academic accommodations for injured student-athletes.
Provides timely updates to relevant athletic department personnel regarding student-athlete health status, limitations, and return-to-play progress.
Assists in developing modified workout plans in partnership with strength & conditioning staff to accommodate injured student-athletes.
Supports the integration of sports nutrition services by coordinating referrals and appointments with the CMU Athletics nutritionist.
Serves as the primary point of contact for the Insurance Coordinator regarding student-athlete insurance matters and documentation.

Program Administration & Operations:
Supervises and mentors athletic trainers as assigned.
Supervises the daily operation of the Rose Athletic Training Room.
Assists with inventory management, including ordering, receiving, and tracking medical supplies and equipment.
Helps maintain the cleanliness, organization, and operational efficiency of athletic training facilities.
Contributes to department-wide efforts related to drug testing in compliance with NCAA Substance Abuse Control Program policies.
Maintains strict compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations, ensuring confidentiality and proper handling of protected health information.
Assists in the recruitment, supervision, and evaluation of athletic training staff, graduate assistants, interns, and students in clinical rotations.
Schedules and evaluates student athletic trainers assigned to the designated sport program.
Supports the ongoing implementation and adherence to departmental policies, procedures, and best practices.
Participates in other administrative duties and special projects as assigned by leadership.
