The Athletic Turf Specialist is responsible for the day to day maintenance of athletics fields/requests. Additionally this position is responsible for daily campus grounds maintenance during winter months and/or when outdoor athletics is no longer active. | | Position Summary |
This position performs maintenance work and/or improved growing conditions for natural turf on intercollegiate athletic fields, intramural fields, the Recreation Center, Huskie Stadium, Yordon Center and other high intensity turf areas on campus.

Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Grounds and/or his/her designee. | | Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
Campus-Wide Snow Removal – 25%

• Remove snow with snowplows, front-end loaders, snow blowers, shovels, picks, brooms, etc.
• May also be assigned to haul away snow in various trucks.

Athletic Field Grounds Maintenance – 25%

• Performs athletic field grounds maintenance such as mowing, trimming grass, aerating, and applying top dressing.
• Applies fertilizers and pesticides according to manufacturers’ recommended rates and in compliance with applicable State of Illinois and USEPA pesticide regulations.

Athletic Field Layout & Landscaping – 20%

• Read landscape design plans and prints for athletic fields, prepares layouts, and performs painting and striping of athletic fields.

Athletic Field Turf Maintenance – 10%

• Develops work schedules for the maintenance of competitive athletic fields on natural turf by coordinating annual horticultural calendar with athletic schedule of events.
• Shifts priorities as weather dictates or as emergencies arise.
• Performs periodic inspections of turf areas and provides recommendations for services needed.
• Diagnose turf problems correctly.

Collaboration with Facility Managers – 5%

• Maintains cooperative relationships with persons in charge of other facilities used in connections with sports competition.

Grounds Irrigation System Maintenance – 5%

• Maintains and performs minor repairs on irrigation systems and inspects head rotations, water distribution, pressure losses, electric solenoids, controllers, leaks, etc.

Equipment Operation & Maintenance – 5%

• Operates and maintains equipment required for the performance of assigned duties.

Other Related Duties – 5%

• Perform other miscellaneous, related duties as assigned. Related duties may include but are not limited to digging for the repair of utility lines, hauling, and other related duties. | | Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service) |
  
• Any combination totaling three (3) years (36 months) from the categories below:
  1. Coursework in fields directly related to turf management (such as in the management, maintenance, and operation of recreational areas, facilities, or equipment; diseases and insects; landscape construction; community recreation; plant science; soils; landscape design and management) as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
  2. 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
  3. Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
  4. 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
  5. Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)

1. Work experience in the professional maintenance of turf grass.

   1. Certification by the Illinois Department of Agriculture as a Public Pesticide Operator in technical category area(s) applicable to work assignments of the position to be filled, as required by the Illinois Pesticide Act.
   2. Current/valid State of Illinois driver’s license for the type(s) of vehicle(s) to be operated. | | Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service) |

   3. Knowledge of equipment and tools commonly used for athletic turf maintenance.
   4. Knowledge of turf problems relating to cultural practices, diseases, or insect damage.

   7. Skill in the operation, use, and maintenance of athletic turf equipment and tools.
   8. Skill in keeping records and writing reports.
   9. Ability to diagnose athletic turf problems correctly.
   10. Ability to make decisions.
   11. Ability to supervise.
   12. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
   13. Ability to coordinate a horticultural calendar with an athletic events calendar.
   14. Ability to shift priorities as weather dictates or as emergencies arise.
   15. Ability to perform hard physical labor.
   16. Manual dexterity.
