Job Summary

The University of Portland Athletics Department is looking for tutors to assist with student-athletes’ academic coursework for all courses. Tutors should feel confident providing writing assistance to the student-athlete. Tutors are expected to be available between 60-90 minutes per week to work with 1-3 student-athletes on study skills, notetaking skills, test preparation, and any other course or assignment-related questions. We are looking for course-specific tutors as well, so please list classes you feel comfortable tutoring. Additionally, tutors will be asked to log tutoring session notes into a database for the Athletics Department to keep track of notes from the sessions.

Core Duties

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

A strong understanding of the subject matter being taught

Ability to communicate the subject matter to another student in a format they understand

Patience and understanding with students who work at a different pace

Meeting with 1-3 student-athletes once or twice per week for 60 minutes throughout the semester

Record tutor session reports/notes in a database

Attending paid training sessions offered jointly through the Athletics Department and the Learning Commons

Ability to navigate Microsoft Teams or Zoom for virtual tutor sessions if needed

Compliance with the University of Portland and

NCAA

rules and regulations in relation to tutoring and academic integrity

Other relevant duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Flexible availability on weeknights and weekends to tutor students with busy schedules

Proficiency in assigned courses (at least a B+ grade or higher in the courses you are tutoring in)

Preferred Qualifications

Previous tutoring, teaching, or coaching experience

Green Dot full training certified or willing to go through the Green Dot training
