Responsibilities

The Director of Broadcasting will be responsible for overseeing and managing the broadcast talent for Utah Athletics’ broadcasts of home athletics competitions for Big 12 Now/ESPN+, provide play-by-play for a number of broadcasts, and play a direct role in the creation of original content showcasing Utah’s 20 sport programs, under the direction of the Sr. Associate A.D. for Strategic Communications.

Play-by-play lead for Utah Utes’ Big 12 Now/ESPN+ broadcasts for multiple sports

Manage scheduling and staffing for play-by-play and analysts for Big 12 Now/ESPN+ and Utah Utes livestreams.

Manage, train and maintain standards for freelance on-air talent

Mentor/trainer for student broadcasters, cultivating pool of talent to contribute to livestreams and content creation

Create an educational pathway for University of Utah students seeking to pursue a career in sports broadcasting, and work with appropriate academic units to develop relevant curriculum.

Manage specific content and maximize use of inventory of video spots in Big 12 Now/ESPN+ broadcasts

Liaison with communications, digital/creative media and broadcast operations staffs to plan, execute and distribute content to appear within Big 12 Now/ESPN+ broadcasts.

Storyboard and plan content to tell stories of Utah student-athletes, coaches and staff (interviews, messaging, narrative-building)

News and Information distributed via YouTube, UtahUtes.com, social media channels

Be present at practices, cultivate relationships and take active role in identifying and telling compelling stories to engage fans, recruits, donors and sponsors.

Emcee Utah Athletics events and make appearances on behalf of Utah Athletics

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency and 4-6 years of experience in sports broadcasting, and progressively more responsible management experience.

Background knowledge of the assigned department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors.

Demonstrated experience in sports broadcasting, media production and content creation.

Ability to travel with teams

Strong communication skills and an effective sense of teamwork and collaboration

Extensive knowledge of the applicable elements of television or radio broadcasting, and ability to conduct interviews with subjects

Mastery of play-by-play abilities and knowledge of the rules of various sports

Familiarity with the inner workings of an intercollegiate athletics department

Experience in managing multiple tasks at once in high-pressure environment of live television production and ability to present in a professional manner that represents the University of Utah in a favorable light.

Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.

Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.

Proven experience as a play-by-play broadcaster for intercollegiate athletics competition, preferably at the high Division I level.
