The LSA role is designed to provide an opportunity for a post-baccalaureate individual to gain experience and prepare for a career as a Learning Specialist in the field of academic support for student-athletes. This part-time position is an academic year commitment for 2024-25, with an opportunity for renewal. Additionally, the role is limited to a maximum of (25) hours per week, hours may vary, and may include evenings and Sundays.

The LSA’s primary responsibilities include working one-on-one with an assigned caseload of student-athletes, creating academic support plans and providing instructional support to improve academic self-efficacy and learning outcomes. The LSA facilitates learning in the areas of goal setting, time management, organization, note-taking, reading, study and test preparation, self-monitoring, self-advocacy, critical thinking, problem-solving and other study and strategies. The LSA will also be responsible for monitoring student progress and fostering student growth and development. They will schedule appointments with assigned students on a weekly basis, write session reports, attend monthly professional development trainings, and uphold all compliance rules as well as MAC policies and procedures. Additional duties may include assisting learning services staff with ongoing projects to enhance the overall operation of the MAC’s Learning Services such as tutoring, mentoring, facilitating educational sessions, and other duties as assigned.

Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree or above, demonstrate strong communication, instructional, and organizational skills, along with being adept at working with a diverse population in a professional and fast-paced environment. A background in teaching, learning and/or mentoring is preferred, as well as experience in a Division I athletic-academic support environment.
