Job Summary

 

The Sustainable Athletics Intern will be responsible for helping to develop internal sustainable athletics practices. This intern will work closely with Athletics operations staff, patrons of IU athletic events, and users of athletic facilities to create guidelines for and implement more sustainable athletics practices and research new ways to reduce the environmental impact of athletic events. This intern will gain hands on experience in project management, program development, collaboration, communication, and more.

Job Summary

 

The Sustainable Athletics Intern will be responsible for helping to develop internal sustainable athletics practices. This intern will work closely with Athletics operations staff, patrons of IU athletic events, and users of athletic facilities to create guidelines for and implement more sustainable athletics practices and research new ways to reduce the environmental impact of athletic events. This intern will gain hands on experience in project management, program development, collaboration, communication, and more.  

Department Specific Responsibilities

• Program Management (60%)
  • Researches, analyzes, and supports STARS categories related to athletics
  • Analyzes concessions offerings and optimize for maximum waste diversion
  • Facilitates and streamlines recycling effort in tailgate lots
  • Analyzes facilities energy performance and work toward optimization
  • Monitors available data, observe trends, and identify gaps in data
  • Calculates and tracks greenhouse gas emissions for athletic programs/events
• Outreach (30%)
  • Educates and guides patrons on correct waste disposal
  • Assists with communicating sustainability efforts on social media
  • Seeks sponsorship opportunities for sustainability projects
• Other (10%)
  • Advertises campus sustainability projects that enhance and highlight sustainable athletics practices and events
  • Assists with other sustainability programs and initiatives across the university system or at your home campus
  • Collaborates with sustainability and athletics focused student organizations
  • Seeks additional funding or grant sources in support of campus / university-wide sustainability and position related initiatives
  • Higher ed / sustainability focused professional development and training opportunities

Qualifications

 

EDUCATION

Required

• Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University
• Must maintain student status for the duration of the internship
• Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater

SKILLS

Required

• Must be reliable and possess strong organizational skills
• Strong desire and ability to learn

Preferred

• Familiarity in principles of sustainability and sustainable athletics practices
• Experience with MS Office applications, specifically Excel, Access, and Word
• Strong writing and communication skills

Working Conditions / Demands

 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The employee is occasionally required to move about the campus and workspace. The employee must occasionally move objects up to 30 pounds. This position requires the ability to detect object both near and far away. 

Laptop / computer use (e.g. Microsoft Office and email) and cellphones are required. Occasional use of printers/copiers, university data and communication software, and office provided supplies.

Work Location

 

Bloomington, Indiana

The work is performed equally in a remote and office setting. This student employee will be expected to work at least 1 day in the office for mentor and bi-weekly full team meetings, and the remainder of their work will be done remotely, on or off campus. At times, workload requires being outdoors or in high traffic indoor / outdoor campus spaces. The noise level in the work environment is moderate.

Advertised Salary

 

$13 for undergraduate students; $15 for graduate students

Work Hours

 

10-20 hours per week
