Job Summary

The Sports Dietitian reports directly to the Assistant AD for Sports Nutrition, and provides the clinical, food service and education/outreach services provided to optimize the health and performance of the student-athletes. Primary responsibilities include individual nutrition counseling; team education; menu development; serving as a food and nutrition resource for coaches, athletic trainers, and sports performance staff; and maintaining professional competency and skills required for professional practice. Assist the Assistant AD for Sports Nutrition on managerial oversight of the Sports Nutrition program. - Student-athlete nutrition counseling and education - Assess and analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance of student-athletes in the context of athletic performance and health. - Assessment and counseling of student-athletes on optimal nutritional practices for exercise training, competition, recovery from practice, recovery from injury and illness, weight management, hydration and supplementation. - Identify and advise on medical-related nutrition concerns such as but not limited to anemia, disordered eating, diabetes, bone mineral disturbances, amenorrhea, dyslipidemia, hypertension, gastrointestinal concerns, food allergies and intolerances, and other medical conditions. - Provide personalized meal and snack plans to promote achieving short- and long-term goals for athletic performance and health - Document nutrition services provided and evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition strategies towards meeting desired outcomes. - Provide assessment and counseling of student-athletes regarding appropriate and legal use of dietary supplements, regularly banned drugs and restricted substances in compliance with sport governing bodies; e.g. NCAA, U.S. Anti-doping Agency (USADA), World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) and the Department of Intercollegiate (DIA) policies - Meet with prospective student athletes as part of the recruiting process providing perspective student-athletes and family members wit comprehensive overview of performance nutrition services. - Coordination of the development and oversight of nutrition education material production, social media, and on-site athlete dining education. - Serve as a member of the menu management team within Varsity Room (Training Table), charged with enhancing the nutritional content of recipes and production techniques for nutritionally adequate meals for athletic performance and recovery - Oversight of all catering, pre-, intra-, post- practice and competition nutrition offerings for the Men’s and Women’s Basketball student-athletes.

• Serve as a member of an interdisciplinary, integrated performance team

  • Conduct and refer screening, treatment and prevention of disordered eating and eating disorders as necessary.
  • Provide consistent communication to coaching staff, strength & conditioning staff, athletic trainers, team physicians, mental health staffs, and administration regarding sports nutrition and sports performance related issues.
  • Collaborate with relevant allied health care providers within the Sports Medicine department’s existing health care network by making referrals when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with sports medicine staff to monitor student-athlete hydration, determine sweat rates and cramping risk, and design individualized hydration plans.
  • Collaborate with the sports medicine and strength & conditioning staffs, to provide the care, education, and fuel necessary for peak performance at workouts, practices, and home and away games.

• Fuel station management

  • Responsible for ordering, inventory, and procurement of goods through necessary vendors for athletic fueling stations.
  • Responsible for recruiting, interviewing, hiring and scheduling undergraduate volunteers, paid students, and Sports Dietitian Interns for the Men’s and Women’s Basketball nutrition program.
  • Provide education and mentorship of sports nutrition undergraduate volunteers and dietitian fellows

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s degree in Nutrition or related field Registered Dietitian (Commission on Dietetic Registration) Licensed Dietitian (State of Illinois) required upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD)

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 9/30/2024. The budget salary range is $58,000-$63,000. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualification, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints.
