Job Summary

The Athletics Department at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Temporary Assistant Learning Specialist! The Assistant Learning Specialist works one-on-one and with small groups of student-athletes who have educational impacting disabilities and deficiencies or are otherwise at high academic risk. Through the creation and implementation of individualized academic plans, the Specialist teaches these students how to be successful in the classroom and in academic environments. This is a part-time, 9-month position beginning in September 2024 and continuing through May 2025.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

At-Risk Student-Athlete Planning and Coaching:

• Work closely with each Learning Specialist regarding students on their caseload that you will be working with in terms of:

  • Creating and implementing strategic plans designed for at-risk student-athletes including study skills/strategy development (note-taking, test-taking, reading comprehension, and time management), motivational techniques, and learning techniques in order to improve the performance and achievement of student-athletes with learning challenges and foster autonomous learners.

Documentation and Communication:

• Provide clear, consistent communication on a frequent basis with Learning Specialists and Herbst Academic Center staff.
• complete documentation of individual sessions and progress of assigned student-athletes after each meeting.

What You Should Know

• This is a temporary position working 9-months from September 3, 2024 - May 7, 2025
• This is a part-time (50%) position working 20-hours per week.

What We Can Offer

• The hourly rate for this part-time position is $18.00 per hour.

Benefits

Temporary positions at the University of Colorado are not benefits-eligible, however, all positions are eligible for paid sick leave.

What We Require

• Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or comparable field. Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.
• Experience teaching or providing academic support services for students with learning deficiencies or disabilities.

What You Will Need

• Knowledge of formal and informal diagnostic and assessment instruments and techniques for academic and career testing.
• Knowledge of regulations and laws associated with ADA and accommodations for the learning disabled.

What We Would Like You to Have

• Experience working with student-athletes in an academic support services setting.
• Experience in providing advising or counseling services and programs for students in areas of study skills, academic survival skills, time management skills, and literacy remediation.
