The Learning Assistance Program within the office of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) office at Virginia Tech is seeking applications for part-time Learning Assistants. The primary responsibility of the Learning Assistant is to provide one-on-one support to student-athletes who have disabilities or who are academically at-risk. This includes but is not limited to working with the student on remediation of fundamental skills needed for academic success, providing academic support with study skills, note taking, time management skills, test-taking strategies, and literacy development. The Learning Specialist within the Learning Assistance Program will supervise the Learning Assistant.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Education or a related field required;
Experience working with students experiencing academic challenges for any reason, including but not limited to, a diagnosed learning disability, Attention Deficit Disorder, a lack of academic preparation, skills, or motivation, etc.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds;
Strong written, oral communication and computer skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Special Education, Education, or a related field;
K-12 teaching experience;
Experience working with student athletes in a NCAA Division 1 environment;
Special Education certification or K-12 teaching credentials in a related field.
